Race to the Dome

Race to the Dome is a 16 mile canoe/kayak race on the Missouri River from Hartsburg to Jefferson City, Missouri.  Proceeds from the race go to Missouri River Relief to support their efforts in reconnecting people to the Missouri River through hands-on river clean-ups and education.  The first annual race takes place on Saturday, July 3, at 8 a.m.; it starts at the Hartsburg river access.  The race will start in heats by division.  The race ends at Noren Access in Jefferson City.  The duration of the race will be between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the paddler’s experience.  For more information go to www.racetothedome.org or e-mail racetothedome@gmail.com

Salute to America

Join us for one of the largest 4th of July celebrations in the state! This year the celebration will include activities beginning on July 3. Activities will take place throughout the day on July 4, and will wrap up with an entertaining concert. The night wouldn’t be complete without the Fireworks Sky Concert extravaganza featuring enormous 16″ shells. Missouri State Museum “Tuesdays @ 2″

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is once again presenting educational programs every Tuesday at 2 p.m. during July at the Missouri State Museum in the State Capitol. Beginning the second Tuesday of June, museum staff will offer a different program each week exploring Missouri’s cultural and natural history. “Tuesdays @ 2″ for July will offer the following programs: July 6- Ready, Aim, Fire, July 13- Nature’s Store, July 20- A Taste of Tradition and  July 27- Fossil Hunt.  The Missouri State Museum is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located inside the Missouri State Capitol at 201 W. Capitol Avenue. Wizard of Oz- “Stars Under the Stars” Outdoor Summer Movie Series

Enjoy your favorite movies on a giant inflatable screen under the stars and in the shadows of the Missouri State Capitol. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and refreshments (no alcoholic beverages permitted) and be entertained by these free family films shown on the south capitol lawn. MO Blues Association’s “Blue Sunday”

MO Blues presents its 4th annual Blue Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 18 at McClung Park.  Blue Sunday features BBQ (with all the HOME MADE trimmings) and blues bands for your entertainment pleasure.  Bring the kids and a lawn chair and sit back, eat good, relax and listen to the best of Central Missouri Blues. Lake Area Community Orchestra Concert in Jefferson City

The Lake Area Community Orchestra will again be staging one of their free Summer Concerts at the First Christian Church, East Capitol Avenue, Jefferson City.  The event will be on Tuesday, July 20, beginning at 7:00 pm.   The public is cordially invited. The more than 40 participants range in age from high school to 70s and come from many communities surrounding the Lake of the Ozarks area including a number from the Jefferson City area. The concert should be of interest to young and old alike and includes a variety of musical selections like Caribbean Rondo, A Tribute to Artie Shaw, Way Down Yonder in New Orleans, Somewhere, Main Street Celebration, March of the Two Left Feet, and America, the Beautiful.  For more information, go to www.lakeareacommunityorchestra.org

Fame, the Musical

“Doubting the Downpour”

The Stained Glass Theater of Mid-Missouri (830 E High Street), Jefferson City Christian theater group, presents “Doubting the Downpour.” Rain! Rain! Rain! Noah, his wife, and three sons work around the clock preparing for the biggest journey of their lives. The animals are gathering but have never seen the like. Suppose Noah is right after all and they have missed their chance to board the gigantic monstrosity called a boat. This wonderful biblical story is told with a great deal of humor and hope from the animal’s perspective. A comedy suitable for the entire family written by local playwrights Linn Lewis and Jane Perry. Presented by the Stained Glass Theater and sponsored by Concord Baptist Church. American Courage, American Carnage

The Missouri State Archives (600 West Main Street) will host “American Courage, American Carnage” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 29. Only one U.S. Army regiment, the 7th Infantry, has served in every war from 1812 through the present day. In American Courage, American Carnage, military historian John C. McManus tells the dramatic story of the 7th Infantry’s combat experiences from the Battle of New Orleans through the end of World War II. McManus will provide an inside look at the drama and tragedy of war, from America’s early 19th century struggles as a fledgling republic to its emergence as a superpower in the 20th century.
