Missouri State Penitentiary tours are back, kickoff event scheduled on March 1

The Missouri State Penitentiary will reopen opens its doors for public tours on Tuesday, March 1. In 2004, the Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) was decommissioned; and in May of 2009, the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau began offering tours of the historic site to the public. In the past two years more than 15,000 people have seen what life was like “inside the walls.” Read more…
Jefferson City Outdoors opens doors for new sporting events

In the spring of 2010, the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau Athletic Events Committee (AEC) hosted a retreat to address various issues regarding sporting events in Jefferson City. Out of that meeting came many good ideas, one of which recently came to fruition. The idea was for the CVB and AEC to form a planning group for sporting events. In December, a group of event planners met and formed “Jefferson City Outdoors.” During the group’s discussion they decided that the focus should be on outdoor and adventure sports and therefore chose a fitting name. March 1 marks the first date of the 2011 Missouri State Penitentiary tour season, and along with the new season comes several new tour types. In 2011, the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau will not only offer a two hour historic tour and a four hour in-depth tour of the MSP, but also will offer twilight tours, specialty history tours, photography tours, ghost hunt tours, ghost tours and paranormal investigations. Missouri State Penitentiary numbers on pace to double 2009 numbers

The first weekend of March, 22 men and women walked through buildings filled with nearly two centuries of history. These individuals took part in this year’s first public tour of the Missouri State Penitentiary. Since then, over 3,650 visitors have toured the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City; just over 3,000 toured the prison in 2009. Read more…

After dozens of calls from interested parties, the tour on Saturday, May 2, is sold out.
